Barrow’s new RNLI lifeboat engaged in lengthy search after distress

On Friday 17 April 2009, Liverpool Coastguard requested the assistance of the RNLI’s, new, Barrow based Tamar class, all-weather lifeboat ‘Grace Dixon’ to search the sea off the Silecroft coast after they received a report of two red distress flares having been seen in the area.

Bouwe Bekking may be enjoying the fact that his TELEFONICA BLUE won the in-port race this past weekend in Rio de Janeiro. However his mind is already on the next big thing: next Saturday, April 11, the Dutch skipper and his ten crewmates on board the Spanish blue VO70 will leave the carioca city for Boston, USA on Leg 6 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008/09.

Oban RNLI Lifeboat, the Mora Edith Macdonald, was paged at 6.59am today (Thursday 9 April), and launched at 7.11am to assist in the search for a missing person in the Loch Aline area.

Launching a lifeboat is a vital link in saving lives at sea. Operators of launch and recovery equipment often have to push the lifeboat out in raging seas and in the dark - so their role is important to the safety of the crew and those they are trying to save.
